The Tour of Britain

What is the Tour of Britain?

From the 6th to the 13th of September 2020, the Tour of Britain will be returning to the nation. The Tour of Britain is the UK’s largest free-to-attend multi-stage cycling race, and will play host to more than 100 of the world’s best riders battling it out to be on the top spot in this prestigious event.

The Tour of Britain will span the UK, starting in Cornwall and finishing in Aberdeen, totalling around 1,250km. British cycling heroes Sir Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish have all previously competed in the event, signifying its importance for the British cycling scene.

The Cornish stage

September 2020 marks the first time the Tour of Britain will be coming to Cornwall. Being at the end of the country, Cornwall makes a perfect location for The Grand Départ, where the seven days of racing will be kicking off. The tour is expected to attract 180,000 people along the roads throughout the county alone, making it a great calendar date for local cyclists to watch the world greats.

The Cornish stage, named The Grand Départ, will be starting in Penzance and concluding in Bodmin, taking a zig-zagging coast to coast route across the county. They will be passing by some of Cornwall’s most iconic tourist attractions and through towns such as St Ives, Falmouth, Newquay and St Austell.

An exciting time for cycling enthusiasts, especially us Cornish folk who get to enjoy our first ever tour coming through the county, summer 2020 is shaping up to be a great time for veteran cyclists or those looking to get involved in the sport.
